Dynamic QR vs short link: differences and when to use each

A dynamic QR is a physical code with an editable destination. A short link is a URL. They are not the same even though both redirect.

A dynamic QR and a short link (like bit.ly) appear to do the same thing: they redirect to a final URL you can change. But they serve different contexts and have different implications for analytics, privacy and format.

What does a dynamic QR have that a short link does not?

The dynamic QR generates a printable physical code. The short link is just a URL. For printed materials you need the QR; for emails and social media, the short link.

A dynamic QR and a short link share the same redirect logic, but have different formats:

The dynamic QR is a printable matrix code. It goes on posters, cards, packaging and any physical medium. The customer scans it with their phone.

The short link (bit.ly, tinyurl, etc.) is a text URL. It goes in emails, messages, social media and any context where the user can tap a link.

They are not interchangeable: a short link on a printed poster is useless (nobody types URLs by hand). A QR in an email works, but creates more friction than a direct link.

Where do a dynamic QR and a short link overlap?

Both allow changing the destination without modifying what has been distributed. Both track click analytics. The difference lies in the channel: physical for the QR, digital for the link.

What they have in common:

- Editable destination: you change the final URL without modifying the QR or the already distributed short link
• Analytics: both record clicks, country, device and date
• Intermediary: both pass through a redirect server before reaching the final destination

Where they differ in analytics:

The dynamic QR codes from codigo-qr.es have no scan limit on any plan. Bitly on its Free plan limits to 1,000 monthly clicks and 5 active links. For high volumes, codigo-qr.es dynamic QR codes are more cost-effective than Bitly Pro.

When to use a dynamic QR and when to use a short link?

Use QR for posters, packaging and cards. Use short links for emails, messages and social media. Combine them when the same destination goes on paper and digital.

Decision guide by channel:

Printed paper (posters, packaging, cards): QR always. The short link does not work because nobody types it by hand.

Email and newsletter: short link (or regular link). The QR works in email but creates more friction.

Social media: short link in the bio or at the foot of the post. A QR only makes sense in an image or Story if the platform lets you scan it.

Optimal combination: create a dynamic QR for printed material and a short link for digital communications. Both point to the same destination, which you can update from the QR dashboard.

What about dynamic QR codes from Bitly or competing tools?

Bitly and competitors offer dynamic QR codes but limit scans or charge per number of active codes. codigo-qr.es includes QR codes with no scan limit from the Free plan.

Comparison of limitations by platform (May 2026, free plans):

Bitly Free: 5 active links, 1,000 clicks/month. For more, you need a paid plan from 35 USD/month.

QR Tiger Free: 3 dynamic QR codes, 500 scans/month. Automatic pause when the limit is exceeded.

codigo-qr.es Free: 2 dynamic QR codes, no scan limit. No automatic pauses.

See the full comparison at QR alternatives.

For companies with high volume (thousands of scans per month on posters or packaging), the absence of a scan limit is decisive. With Bitly or QR Tiger, a popular event poster can exhaust the monthly limit within days.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can a dynamic QR be used as a short link in an email?
Technically yes: the short URL generated by the dynamic QR (like codigo-qr.es/r/abc123) can be pasted as text in an email. But a dedicated short link (bit.ly, etc.) is cleaner for that use.
What limits does Bitly have on its free plan?
As of May 2026, Bitly Free includes 5 active links and 1,000 monthly clicks. Once the limit is reached, links keep working but you lose access to analytics until the next month.
Are the analytics equivalent in a dynamic QR and in Bitly?
Similar but not identical. Both record clicks, country, device and date. The dynamic QR codes from codigo-qr.es add the distinction between scans of the physical QR and direct URL clicks, which Bitly does not differentiate.
What happens if the short link company closes or changes its policy?
If Bitly closes or changes its terms, all bit.ly links stop working. With your own dynamic QR (like the ones from codigo-qr.es), you control the redirect and do not depend on third parties.
