How to read a QR code from a computer without a phone?

Most QR readers work with a phone camera, but when you have the code as an image on your computer the phone is useless. The codigo-qr.es reader solves this in three steps: drag the image, click the upload area, or paste with Ctrl+V.
What does a QR contain before scanning it with your phone?
The reader shows the QR content without opening any link: the URL, text, contact data or WiFi credentials, before you act.
QR codes can contain malicious URLs, unwanted downloads or phishing forms. Inspecting the code before opening it on your phone is the safest way to verify its content. The inspector shows three levels of detail: raw, interpreted and with actions.
Can QR codes be dangerous?
A QR can point to any URL without you knowing until you scan it. Seeing the destination before opening it is the only way to know if it is safe.
Quishing, or QR phishing, works like this: someone replaces or sticks a manipulated code over a legitimate one in car parks, restaurants or transport stops, and when you scan it your phone goes to a page impersonating your bank or payment service. The FBI issued a warning about this in January 2022 after receiving reports across several states.
The manipulated QR looks exactly like the original. The difference is in the destination URL: a domain almost identical to the real one (secure-bank.com instead of bank.com), missing https, or with chained redirects to hide where it actually goes.

What code formats does the online reader support?
The reader decodes 15+ formats: static and dynamic QR, EAN-13, EAN-8, Code 128, Code 39, GS1-128, Data Matrix, PDF417, UPC-A, UPC-E and ITF-14.
Not all online readers decode 1D barcodes as well as QR codes. The codigo-qr.es reader uses the ZXing library, the de facto standard in scanning applications.
Is it safe to use an online QR reader?
The reader processes the code 100% in the browser: no data leaves your device, no server receives the image or the decoded content.
In most online readers the image is sent to a server for processing. In the codigo-qr.es reader, decoding happens entirely in your browser via JavaScript.
How to create a QR identical to the one you scanned?
After decoding, the 'Generate same QR' button takes you to the codigo-qr.es generator with the data pre-loaded, ready to download.
If you need to duplicate a QR, recover a lost one or create a customized version, the reader takes you directly to the generator with pre-loaded data.

Reading extracts the encoded data with the camera. Decoding also interprets that data by type: a vCard shows the contact fields separately instead of raw text.

It depends on the original QR error correction level. The standard supports 4 levels that allow recovering 7% to 30% of lost data.
