What size should a QR code be for printing
The rule: 1 cm of QR for every 3 cm of reading distance
The size of a QR code for printing depends not on the content but on the distance from which it will be read. This guide gives exact dimensions for each type of print material.
What is the minimum QR code size for it to work?
The absolute minimum is 2x2 cm for reading at 20 cm. For most printed materials, 3x3 cm is the practical safe size.
The technical rule: the QR code must measure at least 1 cm for every 3 cm of expected reading distance.
Size table by material:
- Business card (distance 20 cm): minimum 2x2 cm, recommended 3x3 cm
• Restaurant menu holder (distance 30 cm): minimum 3x3 cm, recommended 4x4 cm
• Shop window sticker (distance 50 cm): minimum 5x5 cm, recommended 7x7 cm
• A3 poster (distance 1 m): minimum 8x8 cm, recommended 10x10 cm
• Billboard (distance 5 m): minimum 15x15 cm, recommended 20x20 cm
In practice, larger always works better. The problem arises when the QR is too small: slow readers or those in low-light conditions fail with QR codes below the minimum.
What format should I download the QR in for printing?
Always SVG for print. SVG is vector-based and scales without pixelation. PNG only for digital use where the size is fixed.
The download format is one of the most important decisions for print quality:
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics): the QR is described mathematically, not as pixels. You can scale the SVG to any size without losing sharpness. The QR dots have perfect edges at any resolution. Use SVG for anything going to print: cards, posters, packaging, vinyl.
High-resolution PNG: if PNG is your only option, always download at 2048px. A 2048px QR on a 10x10 cm material gives 200 dpi, sufficient for standard printing. For high-quality printing (packaging or billboards) PNG is not enough.
Codigo-qr.es allows downloading in SVG, PNG and PDF. For print, SVG always.
How does the white margin (quiet zone) affect scanning?
The white margin around the QR is mandatory: minimum 4 modules on all sides. Without a margin, readers fail frequently.
The white margin is not decorative: it is a silence zone the reader needs to identify where the QR starts and ends.
ISO 18004 standard requires at least 4 modules of margin on each side. A module is the smallest square in the QR. In a 3x3 cm QR, that equals about 2-3 mm of white margin on each side.
Problems that occur without sufficient margin:
• The QR does not scan if it is right at the edge of a card or poster
• On dark-colored surfaces, contrast is lost at the edge
• In bleed-free printing, the QR may be cut off
At codigo-qr.es the margin is applied automatically in SVG and PNG downloads. If you crop the image after downloading, always leave that margin.
What DPI do I need to print a QR code?
300 DPI for standard paper. 150 DPI minimum for fabric or rough material. SVG does not depend on DPI because it is vector-based.
Resolution in DPI (dots per inch) matters when printing from PNG:
- Standard offset paper (leaflet, card, poster): 300 DPI minimum
• Digital printing on photo paper: 300-600 DPI
• Fabric, vinyl or textured material: 150 DPI is usually enough because the material texture already limits quality
• Screen or digital display: 72-96 DPI is sufficient, but for QR codes use at least 150 DPI
How to calculate the required PNG size:
• 5x5 cm QR at 300 DPI = 5 cm x 300/2.54 = 590 px
• 10x10 cm QR at 300 DPI = 10 cm x 300/2.54 = 1181 px
That is why the 2048px PNG from codigo-qr.es covers QR codes up to 17x17 cm at 300 DPI. For larger sizes, use SVG.

Preguntas frecuentes
- Can a QR code be rectangular instead of square?
- No: QR codes are always square by design of the standard. You can place it inside a rectangular design, but the code itself must maintain its square shape with the same margins on all four sides.
- Does a black QR code work on a colored background?
- Yes, with conditions: the contrast between the dark modules and the background must be sufficient. Black and white offers maximum contrast. On colored backgrounds, use dark-colored modules (dark blue, dark green, burgundy) on a light background.
- What happens if I print the QR code very small?
- Modern readers can scan QR codes from 1.5x1.5 cm under perfect light and angle conditions. In normal conditions, failures start below 2x2 cm. Below 1x1 cm, most readers fail.
- How much white margin is the minimum to leave?
- At least 4 modules on all four sides. In practice, 3-4 mm of white margin around the QR is sufficient for most print sizes.
