QR Codes on Product Packaging: Guide for Manufacturers and Brands
The QR on the box is the bridge between the physical product and the digital brand experience
A QR code on product packaging connects the buyer to content that does not fit on the label: usage instructions, videos, warranty registration, reviews or the online store for a repeat purchase. This guide covers placement, size, content and measurement.
Where should the QR code go on packaging?
The back panel gets 40% more scans than the side. The inside of the box has the highest scan rate: the buyer is most engaged right at the moment of unboxing.
By position on the package:
Back panel: the most visible spot after the front. The buyer reads it while the product is on the shelf or while waiting. Good for a reviews QR or product detail page.
Inside the box: the highest scan rate. The buyer is emotionally invested (they just opened the package). Ideal for a welcome QR with a usage video or a repeat-purchase discount.
Hanging tag: captures buyers who have not purchased yet. In a physical store they see the product, scan and land on the online listing with more information.
For retail packaging, the QR must coexist with the EAN-13 barcode. They do not compete: the EAN goes to the point-of-sale terminal, the QR goes to the consumer.
What is the minimum size for a QR code on packaging?
Minimum 1.5x1.5 cm for small packages read at 15 cm. For medium-sized boxes, 2.5x2.5 cm is the standard in Spanish and European retail.
Size guide by packaging type:
- Sachets and small containers (under 50 ml): minimum 1.5x1.5 cm. Download in SVG so the printer reproduces it correctly.
• Consumer product boxes (cereal, coffee, cosmetics): 2.5x2.5 cm recommended.
• Large boxes (appliances, furniture): 4x4 cm or more. The further the reading distance, the larger the QR needs to be.
• Hanging tags (clothing, jewellery): 2x2 cm on the reverse.
The most common mistake is making the QR too small so it does not interfere with the design. A QR that cannot be scanned is worse than no QR. Always download in SVG for print and verify scanning before sending to production.
What content should go behind the packaging QR code?
The three pages with the highest conversion are the product usage video, the warranty registration form with a gift, and the repeat purchase page with a loyalty discount.
By business objective:
After-sales support: assembly video or usage instructions. Reduces calls to customer service.
Data capture: warranty registration form with a small gift (5% discount, exclusive content). Converts anonymous buyers into email contacts.
Repeat purchase: product page on your online store with a buy button and possibly a loyalty discount.
Brand engagement: YouTube channel, Instagram account or community. Turns buyers into followers.
With a dynamic QR, you can switch between objectives without reprinting: first the assembly video, then (once the user knows the product) the warranty form.
How do you measure QR code scans on packaging?
With a dynamic QR from codigo-qr.es, the dashboard shows scans per batch if you create a different QR per production run, identifying which batch has the best engagement.
Measurement strategy by production batch:
If you run several print runs of the same product, create a different QR per batch. The content and destination are the same, but the code is different. The dashboard tells you how many buyers from each batch scan.
Why it matters: if the January batch has 3x more scans than the September one, it could be due to the sales channel (online store generates more engagement than physical retail), the time of year or changes in QR placement on the package.
Analytics data includes:
• Total scans per QR
• Country and city
• Device (iOS/Android)
• Peak hour
This level of detail is not possible with a static QR, which records nothing.

Preguntas frecuentes
- Can the QR coexist with the EAN-13 barcode on the same package?
- Yes. They are different standards for different uses. The EAN-13 is read by the point-of-sale terminal. The QR is read by the end consumer with their phone. They can be on the same face if there is enough space.
- Is there any labelling regulation that affects QR codes on packaging?
- QR codes on packaging are not regulated as mandatory labelling. They must comply with general advertising regulations and cannot be used for unverified health, environmental or nutritional claims.
- How do you protect a packaging QR code from moisture and abrasion?
- With matt or gloss lamination over the QR. The lamination does not interfere with scanning if applied correctly. Download the QR in SVG for the highest resolution before laminating. Test scanning before producing the full batch.
- Can the packaging QR code point to different destinations across production batches?
- Yes, with a dynamic QR: the same code can point to different destinations at different times. With a static QR, if you want to change the destination you need to print a new QR. For production packaging, dynamic is the most flexible option.
