QR Code for PDF: share documents without sending files
The customer scans and the PDF opens in the mobile browser — no download, no email attachment
A QR code for PDF encodes the public URL of a PDF file. When scanned, the PDF opens directly in the mobile browser. It is always the current version, without sending the file by email or WhatsApp.
How do you create a QR code for a PDF?
Upload the PDF to Drive or Dropbox, get the public URL, go to the generator, choose URL type and paste the link. The QR is generated instantly.
Steps to create the PDF QR code:
1. Upload the PDF to a storage service with a public link (Google Drive, Dropbox, your own server, etc.) 2. Get the public URL of the file 3. Go to /generador-codigos-qr 4. Select URL type and paste the PDF URL 5. Download the QR in PNG or SVG
The key trick: the URL must point to the file so it opens in the browser, not so it downloads automatically. In Google Drive, use the preview link (/preview) instead of the download link (/export). In Dropbox, change the parameter dl=1 to dl=0.
Where should you host the PDF for the QR to work?
Google Drive, Dropbox and your own server are the most common options. Drive is easiest. A personal server gives more control over the URL.
Options for hosting the PDF:
Google Drive: free up to 15 GB. Upload the PDF, share with 'anyone with the link' and copy the preview link. If you update the PDF with the same filename, the link remains valid.
Dropbox: free up to 2 GB. Upload the PDF, get the shared link and change ?dl=1 to ?dl=0 so it opens in the browser instead of downloading.
Your own server or hosting: maximum control. The URL is permanent and does not depend on third parties. Ideal for internal or technical documents.
Notion or Google Sites: if the PDF is part of a broader knowledge base, you can upload the file there and use the public URL from Notion or Sites.
Static or dynamic QR for PDF?
Static if the PDF will never change. Dynamic to update the document or switch storage platforms without reprinting the QR.
Static QR: encodes the PDF URL directly. If you move the PDF to a new location or update its content at a new URL, you need to generate a new QR and reprint.
Dynamic QR: the code points to a short link from codigo-qr.es. You can change the destination PDF from the dashboard without reprinting. If you migrate from Drive to your own server, update the URL in the dashboard and all printed materials with the QR keep working.
For frequently updated documents (seasonal catalogues, price lists, instructions that change), the dynamic QR saves you reprinting every time.
What if the PDF is too large?
A PDF over 5 MB takes more than 5 seconds to load on 4G. Compress the PDF first or split into sections. Load time directly affects abandonment rate.
The user experience when scanning the QR depends on load time:
- PDF under 1 MB: loads in 1-2 seconds on 4G. No problem.
• PDF of 1-5 MB: between 2-5 seconds. Acceptable.
• PDF over 5 MB: more than 5 seconds. Many users abandon before it loads.
How to reduce the file size:
• Use an online PDF compression tool (SmallPDF, iLovePDF, Adobe Acrobat)
• Reduce image resolution to 150 DPI instead of 300 DPI
• Convert TIFF or BMP images to JPEG inside the PDF
• Split large documents into smaller sections
For catalogues or multi-page documents, consider building a web page or landing instead of a PDF: it loads by section and does not require downloading the entire file.

Preguntas frecuentes
- Does the PDF download or open in the browser?
- It depends on the URL and the mobile browser. With the correct link from Google Drive or Dropbox, it opens in the browser. If the URL forces a download, the file downloads before it can be viewed.
- Does the PDF QR work on iPhone?
- Yes. iOS has a native PDF viewer. PDFs hosted on Drive, Dropbox or a personal server open directly in the Safari browser without needing an extra app.
- Can you password-protect the PDF and still use a QR?
- They are not compatible: if the PDF has a password, the user will need to enter it when opening, which breaks the scan-and-view experience. For protected documents, use a landing page with an access form instead of a direct QR to the PDF.
- How many PDFs can a QR code point to?
- A QR points to a single URL. To share multiple PDFs, use a bio link from codigo-qr.es: a landing page with download buttons for each document, and one QR that covers them all.
